Beyonce’s Homecoming And What It Can Teach Black Millennials About Creativity And Discipline

Last week I had the chance to watch Beyonce’s Homecoming on Netflix with my wife and really enjoyed it!

Homecoming follows Beyonce’s journey and creative process over the 8 months of preparation before her headlining performance at Coachella 2018.

While I have never claimed to be a part of the Beyhive, I have always liked her music and have had the Homecoming album on repeat since we watched the special.

The 2 hour special about how the whole concept for Homecoming came together was amazing…and the film was written, directed and executive-produced by Beyonce.

Beyonce’s had literally been dreaming of having a drumline, and attending an HBCU (Historically Black College or University) her entire life, and saw her vision into reality.

But what stood out to me more was the DISCIPLINE Beyonce showed throughout the entire period, and her committed to her CREATIVE vision…

And we are talking 22-years of discipline and creativity...

Balancing Creativity and Discipline is probably the hardest task we face as black millennials.

We just seem to ooze creativity, and we come up with all the latest trends in music, fashion, dance, and art…

And in business, we have tons of brilliant creative ideas and work for the top companies in the world...

But when it comes to putting in sustained worked and having DISCIPLINE for ourselves we don’t do as well, and that's why I spend a whole week working with my clients on discipline and mindset in my program.

The truth is we all struggle with DISCIPLINE at times, but without it, we are just the idea man/woman who can’t execute.

What Beyonce knows is that if you do not balance both your creative side and your discipline, you are just dreaming, and dreams do not come true unless you put in the work.

She also knows that discipline is not easy and works on her mindset, body, and spirit to make sure when it’s time to execute, she is up to the task.

Lastly, she knows that she can’t do it alone. Yes, she is the QUEEN, but the queen still needs her hive to survive. She remembers that throughout her journey, and at times is more amazed and in awe of the millennials she works with than they are of her.
